PDF417 Barcode in Boarding Pass Application

The BCBP standard defines PDF417 barcode, Aztec, Data Matrix barcode and QR code as the symbologies to be used to encode the data on paper boarding passes. The BCBP standard assumes the above symbologies conform to the ISO specification available in the public domain. It also defines that a mobile phone can be used as a boarding pass (mobile BCBP) provided that it can display one of three selected 2D matrix codes (Aztec, Data Matrix and QR code).

PDF417 barcodes are variable in dimensions, most commonly seen in the rectangular shape. PDF417 is a multi-row barcode symbology with high storage capacity and error-correction capabilities. The PDF417 barcode is a 2D barcode symbology mostly utilized in the areas of logistic applications (especially in the automotive industry), transportation (boarding passes, shipping labels), government identification (driver licenses and identification cards), inventory and document management (postal packages).
