Laser barcode readers are still widely used today, especially for reading one-dimensional (1D) barcodes, such as UPC and EAN. However, they also have some limitations, such as being unable to read damaged, curved, or reflective barcodes, or barcodes off a screen. Moreover, they cannot read two-dimensional (2D) barcodes, such as QR code and Data Matrix, which are becoming more popular due to their higher data capacity and error correction capability.
